Dedicated to the memory of Jim

This site is a tribute to Jim Welling. He is much loved and will always be remembered by his family, friends and extended family within the Basingstoke Amateur Theatrical Society.

We welcome you all to share your wishes and memories of Jim on this site.

The funeral, although limited in the current circumstances, will be live streamed to allow as many people to pay their respects as possible.

Jim supported BATS throughout his life and in his name we have set up a donation link to contribute to the society in such troubling times for the entire industry.

Thoughts

I am extremely sad to hear of the death of Jim, whom I came to know through BATS during many years of our performances at The Haymarket Theatre, when I was a member of the company back in the 1980’s to 1990’s. He was a talented performer and at the heart of the company. I remember him arranging numerous wonderful social gatherings at his home for the members and the families of BATS. He was a lovely kind man, full of generosity and concern for others and with a great sense of humour and fun. I am so sorry that he is no longer with us. Maria Hadnett

When I moved to Basingstoke 33 years ago I needed to find a good hairdresser. I asked a lot of people who cut their hair and the same name kept coming up – “I go to Jim at Edward James”. So a friendship was born as we shared our love of theatre and all things art, and the odd lunch and/or drink together. We always had a lot to share with the ups and downs of life and time spent in his company ‘putting the world to rights’ was accompanied by laughter, calm and therapy. I watched as he nurtured many ‘raw recruits’ into the profession and supported his staff, always with good humour. The local artistic community have lost a ‘real trooper’, mentor and friend. We are the poorer for it. Go forth Jim to the next life and take centre stage. Bridget

It is both an honour & a privilege to call you my friend. Time in your company was always a pleasure & I am so sad that we won’t take our places again at the Red Lion bar. Although only in my life for four years, you will remain one of the most decent, funny lovely men that I have been lucky enough to know. I will always remember you & the laughs we shared. For the time you were in my life, I will always be grateful. Rest in peace Lovely Man - Jane xxx
